Sayyid Abdurahiman Bafaqi Thangal: The Torch Bearer of Communal Harmony and Educational Empowerment

Sayyid Abdurahiman Bafaqi Thangal (1906–1973) was a towering figure in Kerala politics and one of the founding leaders of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). Renowned as the driving force behind the empowerment of the Malabar Muslim community, he was celebrated for his unwavering integrity, loyalty, and commitment to keeping his promises. His loss left an irreplaceable void in the IUML, as he was a leader of exceptional character and vision.

Bafaqi Thangal’s political philosophy was rooted in communal harmony. He tirelessly worked to defuse tensions in areas affected by communal flare-ups, dedicating himself to maintaining peace and unity. His words and actions were always considerate, ensuring that no one’s sentiments were hurt.

A visionary in education, Bafaqi Thangal emphasized the importance of value-based education, blending secular and theological learning. He personally funded scholarships for students and played a pivotal role in the Madrassa Movement of the early 1950s, which laid the foundation for the educational advancement of Kerala’s Muslim community. As the founder treasurer of the Samastha Kerala Islamic Education Board (established in 1952), he institutionalized efforts to promote education. An esteemed Islamic scholar, he was also a member of the 40-member Mushavara of Samastha Kerala Jamiyathul Ulama, the apex body of Islamic scholars in Kerala.

Bafaqi Thangal was a bridge between traditional values and modernity, embodying the ideals of a pluralistic society. His soft-spoken yet bold demeanor earned him respect across communities. He demonstrated how to live by Islamic principles while gaining the confidence and acceptance of others, setting an example of leadership rooted in humility and inclusivity.

Sayyid Abdurahiman Bafaqi Thangal’s legacy remains a beacon of integrity, communal harmony, and educational empowerment, inspiring generations to uphold lofty ideals in both politics and social life.
